A metaphorical checkbox (abbreviated as MC) is a goal or task. For instance, if I had a desire to travel to Britian then that would mean that I have a large metaphorical checkbox labelled "travel to Britian" in my head. Washing the dishes is also a MC, but it's a very small MC.
Every time I complete a task, I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride that is in direct proportion to the size of the checkbox.
Some people would simply describe a person who thought this way as "goal oriented". I suppose that works too, but to me life is all about MCs. When I finish something it seems to me like a checkbox has been checked.
YMMV
